FAQ

What is the minimum slope for a drain pipe?

Per IPC Section 704.1, pipes 3 inches or smaller require 1/4 inch per foot (2.08%). Larger diameters allow shallower grades down to 1/20 inch per foot.

Can a drain pipe have too much slope?

Yes. Grades exceeding roughly 4% (1/2 inch per foot) can cause liquids to outrun solids in sanitary lines, leaving waste behind and causing clogs.

Why does my pitch angle show less than 2 degrees?

Standard drainage slopes are shallow. Even a 2% grade equals only about 1.15 degrees, which is normal and correct for gravity drainage.

Should I enter pipe length or horizontal run?

Always enter horizontal run. Using the pipe’s total length instead of horizontal distance will understate the true slope and produce an incorrect grade.

What units should I use for the calculation?
