The Progress Percentage Calculator shows how much of your total goal is complete using your completed amount, remaining percentage, and remaining amount.
Assumptions & Limitations
Finding the exact percentage of a completed target requires just two numbers: the Completed Amount and the Total Goal. Entering these values instantly shows how far along you are toward reaching an objective.
The results provide four practical outputs: progress percentage, remaining percentage, remaining amount, and a clear progress status. These metrics work seamlessly for tracking tasks, savings, fundraising, sales goals, pages read, workout targets, hours completed, and any other measurable target.
| What you enter | What the calculation provides |
|---|---|
| Total Goal | Progress Percentage |
| Completed Amount | Remaining Percentage |
| Remaining Amount | |
| Progress Status |
How This Progress Percentage Calculator Works
Simply enter a Total Goal and a Completed Amount. The system immediately processes these values to return the Progress Percentage, Remaining Percentage, Remaining Amount, and Progress Status.
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Total Goal | The full target you want to reach |
| Completed Amount | The amount finished, achieved, or collected so far |
| Progress Percentage | The share of the goal already completed |
| Remaining Percentage | The share of the goal still left |
| Remaining Amount | The amount still needed to reach the target |
| Progress Status | A text summary of your current progress phase |
Progress Percentage Formula
Three core equations are needed to process the numbers. Dividing the completed portion by the target and multiplying by 100 reveals the progress, while a subtraction step determines exactly what is left.
| Output | Formula |
|---|---|
| Progress Percentage | $$\left(\frac{\text{Completed Amount}}{\text{Total Goal}}\right) \times 100$$ |
| Remaining Amount | $$\max(0, \text{Total Goal} – \text{Completed Amount})$$ |
| Remaining Percentage | $$\left(\frac{\text{Remaining Amount}}{\text{Total Goal}}\right) \times 100$$ |
Progress Percentage Examples

| Goal type | Completed Amount | Total Goal | Progress Percentage | Remaining Percentage | Remaining Amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tasks | 25 | 100 | 25% | 75% | 75 |
| Savings | 850 | 1,550 | 54.84% | 45.16% | 700 |
| Fundraising | 4,200 | 5,000 | 84% | 16% | 800 |
| Pages read | 120 | 300 | 40% | 60% | 180 |
| Workout hours | 18 | 24 | 75% | 25% | 6 |
| Sales target | 12,500 | 10,000 | 125% | 0% | 0 |
What Your Progress Percentage Means
Your calculated percentage determines your Progress Status, falling into one of a few distinct categories depending on how close you are to your goal.
| Progress Percentage | Progress Status Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0% | Nothing completed yet |
| More than 0% and less than 100% | Goal is in progress |
| 100% | Goal is fully completed |
| More than 100% | Goal has been exceeded; remaining amount is 0 |
Remaining Percentage and Remaining Amount
The outputs reveal more than just the finished percentage. They also break down exactly what is left, separating the remaining share from the actual remaining quantity.
Remaining Percentage tells you what share of the target is still left to complete. Remaining Amount tells you the actual, physical quantity still needed to hit the mark.
| Output | Best for |
|---|---|
| Progress Percentage | Seeing how much of the goal is done |
| Remaining Percentage | Seeing what percent is still left |
| Remaining Amount | Knowing the exact quantity still needed |
When Progress Goes Over 100%
Sometimes you push past your original target. If your Completed Amount is greater than your Total Goal, your progress percentage will exceed 100%. When this happens, the remaining amount drops to 0, and the remaining percentage becomes 0%. This simply indicates that your target was exceeded.
| Completed vs Goal | Result |
|---|---|
| Completed < Goal | Progress below 100% |
| Completed = Goal | Progress equals 100% |
| Completed > Goal | Progress above 100%, remaining becomes 0 |
Input Rules and Calculation Limits
To ensure accurate results, there are a few simple rules for the entered data. Both fields are required and must be valid numbers. Negative numbers are not supported, but decimal values and very large values work perfectly. If the Total Goal is set to 0, the progress percentage becomes undefined.
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Both inputs required | Missing total or completed amount prevents calculation |
| No negative values | Standard progress tracking does not support negatives here |
| Total Goal cannot be 0 | Progress percentage is undefined when target is zero |
| Decimals allowed | The calculation works for money, hours, distance, weight, and other fractional values |
