- Appetite setting changes turkey size and servings
- Results are designed for whole turkey planning
How Much Turkey Per Person?
The calculator assumes 1 pound per adult-equivalent for normal portions and 1.5 pounds per adult-equivalent for large portions or leftovers. Children are counted as 0.5 of an adult.
Turkey Size Formula Used by This Calculator
Adult equivalent$$\text{Adult equivalent} = \text{Adults} + (\text{Children} \times 0.5)$$
Turkey weight$$\text{Turkey weight} = \text{Adult equivalent} \times \text{Serving multiplier}$$
Serving multipliers
- Normal appetite = 1.0 lb
- Large appetite / leftovers = 1.5 lb
This math is designed for purchase planning. Whole turkey weight includes bone, skin, and non-edible weight, which is why the per-person turkey weight recommendation is higher than the actual edible meat yielded.
Turkey Size Chart by Number of People
| Adults | Children | Adult Equivalent | Normal Portions | Large Portions / Leftovers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 0 | 6 | 6 lb | 9 lb |
| 8 | 2 | 9 | 9 lb | 13.5 lb |
| 10 | 4 | 12 | 12 lb | 18 lb |
| 12 | 4 | 14 | 14 lb | 21 lb |
| 15 | 5 | 17.5 | 17.5 lb | 26.25 lb |
| 20 | 6 | 23 | 23 lb | 34.5 lb |
The calculator uses these planning ratios internally, then rounds the final recommendation into a more practical purchase size.
Turkey Thaw Time Calculator Logic
The calculator estimates thaw time using two standard methods: refrigerator thawing and cold water thawing.
Refrigerator Thaw Time Formula
$$\text{Fridge thaw time} = \left(\frac{\text{Turkey weight}}{4.5}\right) \times 24 \text{ hours}$$
Cold Water Thaw Time Formula
$$\text{Cold water thaw time} = \text{Turkey weight} \times 30 \text{ minutes}$$
Turkey Thaw Time Chart by Weight
| Turkey Weight | Refrigerator Thaw Time | Cold Water Thaw Time |
|---|---|---|
| 8 lb | ~1 day 19 hrs | 4 hrs |
| 10 lb | ~2 days 5 hrs | 5 hrs |
| 12 lb | ~2 days 16 hrs | 6 hrs |
| 14 lb | ~3 days 3 hrs | 7 hrs |
| 16 lb | ~3 days 13 hrs | 8 hrs |
| 18 lb | ~4 days | 9 hrs |
| 20 lb | ~4 days 11 hrs | 10 hrs |
| 24 lb | ~5 days 8 hrs | 12 hrs |
Refrigerator thawing is slower but easier to plan since it requires no maintenance. Cold water thawing is faster but requires constant attention and frequent water changes.
Turkey Cooking Time Calculator Logic
This calculator estimates cooking time based on your turkey’s weight and your chosen cooking method. Oven roasting is handled differently from non-oven methods.
Oven Roasted Turkey Cook Time
For oven roasting, the calculator uses standard weight-band time ranges calculated at 325°F (163°C). The table below outlines the estimated timeframes for both unstuffed and stuffed preparation methods.
| Turkey Weight | Unstuffed | Stuffed |
|---|---|---|
| 8–12 lb | 2 hr 45 min – 3 hr | 3 hr – 3 hr 30 min |
| 12–14 lb | 3 hr – 3 hr 45 min | 3 hr 30 min – 4 hr |
| 14–18 lb | 3 hr 45 min – 4 hr 15 min | 4 hr – 4 hr 15 min |
| 18–20 lb | 4 hr 15 min – 4 hr 30 min | 4 hr 15 min – 4 hr 45 min |
| 20–24 lb | 4 hr 30 min – 5 hr | 4 hr 45 min – 5 hr 15 min |
For very small or very large turkeys that fall outside this main chart range, the calculator uses extrapolated estimates to provide a safe planning window.
Deep Fried, Smoked, and Roaster Turkey Estimates
These alternative methods use approximate per-pound cook-time estimates, rather than the weight-band table used for traditional oven roasting.
| Cooking Method | Calculator Estimate | Appliance Temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Electric Roaster Oven | 15 minutes per lb | 325°F (163°C) |
| Deep Fried | 3.5 minutes per lb | 375°F (190°C) oil |
| Smoked | 35 minutes per lb | 225°F–250°F (110°C–120°C) |
These are baseline planning estimates. Actual cooking time can vary based on the bird’s shape, whether it is stuffed, your specific equipment, and outdoor weather conditions for smoking or frying.
Turkey Cooking Method Time Comparison
| Method | Best for | Time style | Temperature | Calculator output type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oven Roasted (Unstuffed) | Standard holiday roasting | Range | 325°F | Weight-band estimate |
| Oven Roasted (Stuffed) | Stuffed whole turkey | Range | 325°F | Weight-band estimate |
| Electric Roaster Oven | Countertop roasting | Approximate | 325°F | Per-pound estimate |
| Deep Fried | Faster cooking | Approximate | 375°F oil | Per-pound estimate |
| Smoked | Lower-temp slow cook | Approximate | 225–250°F | Per-pound estimate |
How Many People Will a Turkey Feed?
In the “Calculate Servings & Cook Time” mode, the calculator estimates how many adults a specific turkey will feed based on its total weight and your appetite setting.
Formula Used$$\text{Estimated adults fed} = \frac{\text{Turkey weight}}{\text{Serving multiplier}}$$
A normal appetite setting assumes smaller portions and feeds more people. A large appetite setting accounts for bigger portions or planned leftovers, meaning the same turkey will feed fewer people.
